In the ocean near Africa, a group of people called the Lotus-Eaters dwell on a sole island. They are supposedly a peaceful, sedate group, but they use a form of weapon that wouldn't be expected. The lotus' that they eat have a narcotic effect, and have been used in the past against people coming to the island. Such a thing happened with Odysseus and his crew, and three of his men ate the lotus' before they realized what was happening.

Calipso was a nymph goddess. Calipso is not described as an evil character, but she kept Odysseus on her island away from his family. She loved him so much that she wanted to keep him away from Penelope as long as possible which happened to be seven years. Odysseus journey was almost over, because Calipso kept him for such a long time. However after seven years Zeus finally ordered her to let him go back to his family, Calipso was upset about, but she accepted Zeus’s proposal and she let Odysseus go back to his family. Odysseus finally came back home and saw his family once again.

For my assignment, a received Charybdis, who would be considered the who. She is a female monster who makes a deadly whirlpool. She does this by sucking in water three times a day. She appears in Odysseus’ story after the land of the dead, in which they return to Circe’s island. The exact date isn’t spoken about too much; neither is the where, except that it is under a great wild fig, which attempts to suck in the ship of Odysseus. One of the reasons for this happening could be considered fate as it has already been spoken of that only Odysseus would survive out of his crew, but another reason could be lust for things to feast on. A monster like Charybdis would probably get quite hungry and need food like humans, and the chance would seem quite open to take.

The Cyclops Polyphemus is the first monster Odysseus and his crew face in their journey. It is not the first antagonist told about but it does kill some of Odysseus's men. The Cyclops traps the men in its cave and eats them. Odysseus escapes by outsmarting the cyclops. He stabs it in the eye and hides under the cyclops's herd so that when the blind cyclops feels what it is he feels the rams and lets the rams out. He then steals the herd and moves on to the next island. On the way to the next island the cyclops foreshadows by cursing Odysseus and praying to Poseidon.

Scylla is a horrific monster with four eyes, six long necks equipped with grisly heads, each of which contains three rows of sharp teeth; she has twelve tentacle-like legs and a cat's tail with six dog-heads around her waist. Scylla was the daughter of the river god Crataeis and was loved by Glaucus, but Glaucus himself was also loved by the sorceress Circe. While Scylla was bathing in the sea, the jealous Circe poured a potion into the sea water which caused Scylla to transform into a monster. Odysseus meets Scylla when trying to sail through the strait of Messina. The sorceress Circe tells Odysseus to sail past Scylla, saying “Hug Scylla's crag—sail on past her—top speed! Better by far to lose six men and keep your ship than lose your entire crew.” Scylla gets six of Odysseus’ best men, eating them alive.

My report is on Calypso. Calypso a nymph also a seductress, she is the daughter of the Titan god Atlas and her mother was Tethys. She was imprisoned on a deserted island. The reason for her imprisonment on the island was because she supported her father in the war between the Titans and Olympians, she was for the Titans. The island of her imprisonment was called Ogygia, the same island where Odysseus stayed with Calypso for seven years and supposedly bore him two children. She wanted to keep Odysseus because she loved him, and did not want to be alone again.

Hello, this Dave Fugger reporting from channel 5 news. A recent story is one about the jorney of odysseus since he is now home. He told us about a cyclops that almost ate him and his crew. He didn't go into depth about it, but it sure was interesting. His real name is Polyphemus and it turns out that he is a man eater after all. He is really tall and of course has a huge eye. Odysseus meets this cyclops after visiting the island of the lotus eaters. We still haven't confirmed why he is killing off his men, but FBI and SWAT are trying to hunt this monster down before he kills any one else.

I had Circe chosen. Circe is an enchantress and a minor goddess that Odysseus and his men come across after escaping the Cyclops. She initially acted kind to Odysseus’s men, but Eurylochus wasn’t convinced. She then turned Odysseus’s scouting party into pigs, and only Eurylochus escaped. He told Odysseus, who then went to confront Circe. Before he confronted Circe, Hermes gave him a plant that resisted her magic. After confronting her, she realized that she could do nothing to him. So she turned Odysseus’s men back to normal and then they stayed for a while and basically partied. Afterwards, she said she would only let them escape if Odysseus could go to the underworld and get the wisdom of the blind prophet.

Polyphemus is a one-eyed giant whose race is called the Cyclops. He captures Odysseus and his crew in his cave. Polypphemus ate some of Odysseus' men, and Odysseus decided that he and what is left of his crew must esacape this treacherous monster. The second night, Odysseus gets Polyphemus drunk and vulnerable, and said his name was Nobody, so after when Odysseus and his men stabbed the one*eyed monster in his eye, the other Cyclops would not understand why was Polyphemus shouting. Odysseus and his crew fled from the cave, and onto a ship, sailing far away from the Cyclops island.

Argos is Odysseus' dog. He was trained by his master to hunt deer and hare but never got the chance to hunt before his master was sent to fight in Troy. Although he has remained faithful he has been taken out by other men encluding Odysseus' son Telemachus. Argos was the the only living being other than Odysseus' son who knew who he was.

Calypso is a nymph goddess who lives on her own island all alone. When we meet Calypso she has Odysseus trapped on her island where she keeps him for seven years. When Odysseus had arrived on her island he had been almost home and through with his journey. Calypso is so in love with him she plans on never letting him go back to his wife Penelope. Finally out of pity Zeus send Hermes to deliver the message to release Odysseus from her captivity. So at the end calypso releases Odysseus crying and we never see her again

The Cyclopes is one of the first creatures that odysuess and his men face. At first the Cyclopes captures some of odysuess men and devours them but he takes the rest of his men to his cave to eat for later. Odysuess later then escapes from the cave with his men bu stabbing the creature in the eye and hiding amongst the rams that the cyclopes owns. unable to see the cyclopes lets the rams go and does not see odysuess and his men escape. however the cyclopes prays to posiden that he will carry his vengance to the men foreshadowing that something terrible will happen to them.

I received Charybdis as my monster. Charybdis is a sea monster that resides in the strait of Messina. She is sister to Scylla. They are both thought to be female monsters. Charybdis was there after they had passed the sirens and before they passed Scylla. Charybdis was the alternative to going past Scylla and losing six men but Odysseus decided to go by Scylla instead of Charybdis. She is said to be based on an actual whirlpool that was said to be there.
