Women's Issues: Comparative Texts
It has been argued that women in nineteenth-century America could not really be free. Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Kate Chopin are often referred to as feminist authors, who created characters who question the roles that they play.. Willa Cather often represents a different type of women in her writing, women of the frontier who find themselves facing different challenges. Eudora Welty's writings reflect a changing awareness of the impact of racism in the South. Their protagonists are usually women, and their conflicts are frequently with men. In Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, we will further examine the themes more deeply, and the class copy includes critical essays and Wharton's thoughts on the novel in the Connections section at the back.
For this activity, you will choose 2 authors. In order to reflect on the works of two women authors, you will also develop annotations of the critical essays that are connected with the texts. In your prompt response (6 paragraph essay), you will compare the lives of the authors, the lives of their characters, and how the stories develop female characters. Use at least three pieces of evidence from each of the two works that you choose and develop an original thesis in a literary analysis paper. This is a side-by-side analysis of the three features.

Documenting AMerica Blog
During the Great Depression, F.D.R. enlisted American photographers to document life in the United States. The Library of Congress provides amazing access to the black-and-white photographs of the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information (FSA-OWI) collection. These images show Americans at home, at work, and at play. The emphasis was on rural and small-town life and the adverse effects of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and increasing farm mechanization. In the latter years, the project documented America's mobilization for WWII. Here, the photograph reflects the elements of painting, where the primary focus is on depiction of a person, a place, an event, etc.

The American Dream: Lost and Found
Choice 1:
In "Towards a Definition of American Modernism," Daniel Joseph Singal notes that many writers "chronicled the disintegration of modern society and culture, but [their] primary concern . . . was somehow 'to make the world re-cohere'" (20). After reading "Notes on American Modernism" by Kenneth Waltzer, write an informative/explanatory essay in which you consider Singal's words as you examine the social-political critique of the modern world from the plays, the novels, the short stories and essays that we read during this unit. You must include at least 3 texts that we read during Quarter 4 for this informative/explanatory essay. You should cite evidence from the short stories, novels, and the Waltzer essay to support your thesis. 2-3 pages typed.
Choice 2:
In the interview of Shelby Steele, he discussed his work The Content of Our Character. Here, Steele examines a philosophical divide which develops in A Raisin in the Sun and Black Boy
