Romantics BLOGS
Poetry Analysis: Shelley and Keats. In Shelley’s “Ozymandias” and Keats’s “Ode on a Grecian Urn,” both poets utilize ancient world images to make ironic statements. Acting almost as archeologists, both Shelley and Keats present the values of the past but also provide a critique on “timelessness” in their odes. Additionally, Shelley and Keats use the past to create commentary on the present. Examine the role of speaker, imagery, the structure of the poem in terms of developing their attitude towards the subject. Use textual evidence to discuss and write an original, concise thesis statement to support your position.
C/C Poetry Analysis: Blake. Read selected poems from Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience. Consider biblical allusion to explain the relationship between Innocence and Paradise. How is Experience a metaphor for the Fall of Man? Use textual evidence to discuss and write an original, concise thesis statement to support your position.
Dueling Poem: Select one of the poetic styles and create your own poem, reflecting the romantic/gothic ideals of the Romantics. Must be at least 14 lines and include figurative language, imagery, etc.
Comparative Texts: The Gothic. Mary Shelley reflected that Coleridge read to her “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” when she was child. Explain the gothic elements of the poem influence her novel, Frankenstein. Consider the isolation of the mariner and the monster and how authors reflect the reactions of individuals to difficult experiences. Use textual evidence to discuss and write an original, concise thesis statement to support your position.
Art Connection Blog: Man and Nature. Examine and discuss the artworks listed. How did artists of this period frame the relationship between man and nature? Where does man belong in these images—or does he even belong? Which looks more romantic in style to you and why? Do you believe these images were painted for ‘art’s sake,’ or for a larger social purpose? Use textual evidence to discuss and write an original, concise thesis statement to support your position.
