What do you suppose Dickens means by "tenderness of conscience"? How is Pip's love for Joe unconscious? How do you allow someone to love you?
2. Compare and contrast the behavior of a person who lets himself or herself be loved with that of a person who does not. Illustrate your points with references to characters in Great Expectations or other novels with which you are familiar, film characters, or, perhaps, personal experience.
