Beowulf is an epic of of the heroic sources of English culture. It also uses a host of traditional motifs, or recurring elements. Beowulf is an oral epic, handed down with changes and embellishments, from one minstrel to another. The stories of Beowulf are traditional, they are stories of dream, and legend, archetypical tales of monsters and god-fashioned weapons, of descents to the underworld and fights with dragons, of the hero's quest and a community threatened by the powers of evil.

For the story: The Bards: Singing of Gods and Heroes, America inherited the sense of poetry. To the Anglo-Saxons, creating poetry was as important as fighting, hunting, farming and loving.

America and the Anglo-Saxons have a lot more in common than one would think. The Anglo-Saxons were a group of people that were centered around their military, they didn't live very luxurious lives and were commonly misconceived as being barbaric. America is seen as the big dogs on the block, we have a very strong and prideful military power and use it often. The Anglos were very similar in that their culture was centered around their military. For example the best warrior was generally the leader of the tribe and as the leader he was in charge of keeping law and order through out his people. In the U.S government, the President or Commander and Chief of the armed forces is in charge of the executive branch. His over all job description is to ensure the law is enforced. For another example the Anglo-Saxon community was ruled by a consensus or majority rules. Our modern voting system resembles this consensus style government the Anglo-Saxons had. Who knew the Anglo-Saxons and America had so much in common?

America inherited government, British literature, and English language. UNIFYING FORCES: Alfred the Great led the Anglo-Saxons against the invading the Danes. The Danes ended up taking over & settled in parts of northeast and central England. Christianity provided a common faith and also a common system of principles and good manner- it linked England to Europe. ANGLO SAXONS SWEEP ASHORE: Angles & Saxons from German and Jutes from Denmark settled the better and bigger part of Britain. The Celts moved back into Wales (far west of the country, but left traces of their cultures). The mercantile system led to the middle class. This also led to the increase in the city sizes and provided different option opportunities for peasants. English common law was continuous in the English court system, but the Normans also enforced on England: system of military feudalism.

In the sections, “The British Legacy” and “The Spirit of the Celts,” the first question this section answers is what specifically did America inherit from Britain in terms of our political system, law, and language? The British started to accept the philosophy of the Magna Carta, “by and for the people.” Although America rebelled from British monarchy, there are some parallel structure in the American Constitution. British literature and the English language travelled to American with the rebellion, and influenced American culture.

American inherited the English language from Britain. During this time Latin was the language that was mainly used in any source of study, until King Alfred came around. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle was instituted and helped the English language gain more respect, therefore it started to be more widely used.

We should remember back in the days when the British had their empire because without their influence America would not be the way it is today. It's because of the British common law--with its emphasis on personal rights and freedom that the U.S. is the way it is today. It is also because of the British Parliamentary government, British literature, and the English Language. We owe the way we think of Great Britain because of all the people that have invaded and settled there. One of the groups that were there were the Celts (kelts), who were tall blond warriors. Another group that was with them was the Brythons-Britons. The religion of the Celts was a form of animism from the Latin word for "spirit". They saw spirits everywhere. These spirits controlled all aspects of exsistence and they had to be satisfied constantly with dances or human sacrifices.

Anglo-Saxon is a relatively modern term. It refers to settlers from the German regions of Angeln and Saxony, who made their way over to Britain after the fall of the Roman Empire around AD 410.
