Choice 1: In Orwell's 1984, I think he uses history in the novel to represent Totalitarianism by talking about how the Party will change events that were documented in the past to fit their needs. So they control the past and can make the population believe anything they want. Orwell analyzes man's rebellion against tyranny by showing the lengths that man will go to, to be free from those who would endeavor to suppress them. He exposes man's fear by writing in the characters of the Proles who would have the numbers to overthrow the Party yet they are too terrified to make a move against them.

Choice 1: When Orwell was writing 1984 the after effects of World War II was at its worst, and there wasn't much hope left. Orwell used the history of war and World War II to represent Totalitarianism by describing how the Party changes history by rewriting events in the history books to fit their current Party line. This way the Party uses the past events and changes them, which in one way gives them the power to control the past and what people believed. Orwell was describing how inner rebellious thoughts led to actions, how far Winston was willing to go, and if it was even possible to become free in a world such as the one Winston lived in. Was there anything as freedom at all? Orwell exposed man's fear by describing the characters of the Proles, who would actually have the number of people enough to overthrow the Party, but never dared to do so.

I think Orwell when writing 1984 what he was trying to get the readers to understand about governments is that they have to much power and if you let them they can completely control you. Also sometimes that governments do bad things so that the greater good will still be better which is wrong. Orwell also exposes a mans Fear and analyze man's Rebellion to see what really scares a person and to see how much a person can take until they have to rebel without choice.

Choice 2: In Orwell's essay "The Politics of the English Language" Orwell discusses many topics with one of them being the role media plays in ones everyday life. Orwell first addresses the concerns he has about media and ones private life chiefly how the invention of the radio and the television intrude on ones private life with a constant bombardment of news updates without a moment of silence for any citizen. Years ago in Orwell's time it seemed as though news flow was something you could easily control and tune out however, now with the invention of the internet and live streaming via the internet information is constantly hitting us from all directions ranging from the latest fashion to the latest updates on Ukraine. Having said that I think Orwell would be highly impressed with the way information and reports can be so wide spread so quickly from different places so that the whole story may be resolved from an issue but, Orwell would be disgusted with the way most major news outlets use flashy titles and misleading information in order to mold readers to their agendas and their stance on an event.
