The Dred Scott Political Cartoon characters were mainly to describe different countries and explain how they would they would trade goods. Also they would interact with others countries and use their owners to say we are the big country that a goes around and starts to gathering their people and start war. Dred Scot was mainly about salves wanting freedom. Well they couldn’t get freedom unless they had power against the other country. But instead of solving for slavery the Dred Scott would have to force Lincoln’s Republican Party to send down territories. The cartoon drawing about the Dred Scott was mainly about “Political Quadrille”, and it tries to capture the attention of what other people could image it being shown for as. Each of the four candidates were dancing in the picture and showing the Supreme Court that Dred Scott just made the decision themselves and no other could.

The illustration “Amazing Image of Full Infantry Charge of a Black Soldier Regiment” is a powerful image that speaks for itself plenty. The subject is the blacks joining the war on the union side against the rebels, and not only that, but winning. The audience is supposed to be everyone in general, the blacks, the rebels, the union, and the citizens on each side. The attitude here seems to be revengeful and there’s an attitude of pride for the blacks fighting side by side with the whites against slavery and the rebels. The purpose of the illustration is possibly for everyone to see how the blacks are now physically fighting for their freedom and for all the whites on both sides of the war to see that they are capable and maybe join the union side. It also would serve an example for the salves and other blacks to see that they are capable of fighting back and encourage them to join the union. The speaker is the illustration itself. It shows alone that all the doubts about the blacks were untrue and that white and black can fight side by side and win.

The cartoon illustrates how the white man sees himself superior to the African American, and therefore decides rather to drown than to let one of them save his life. The cartoon was most likely created so that it would appeal to northerners in an attempt to show how ridiculous the southern discrimination of African Americans were. The fact that the slave is hanging down; actually putting his own life at risk even depicts stronger how the southern attitude was towards African Americans. The illustrator of the cartoon is also attempting to appeal to the northerners as well as the politicians, in a battle against racism that would not end until the Civil Rights movements, a decade later.

A Consistent Negrophobist shows the subject of a black offering help to a drowning white man in need. The occasion was when Congress approved the use of black men as soldiers in the Union army. The attitude was one of resistance by the white soldiers to fighting side by side with negros due to racial prejudice. The purpose of this cartoon was to illustrate how much lesser the whites believed the blacks to be even to the point of not taking their help and drowning. The speaker in this cartoon was the white man.

I chose «The First Vote» cartoon, by A. R. Waud. The cartoon illustrates the first time a freed slave was able to vote. The time period is 1867 and you see a freed slave placing his vote, and there are other freed slaves who served in the army that is also placing their vote. The occasion for this cartoon is the starting point of a new period for freed slaves, they could now vote, get paid and work in the government. The audience would be a freed slaves and the common white man, for them to see the change in time. The attitude is positive from former slaves and abolitionists, cause the cartoon represents a long fight that ended with victory. On the other hand, for a southern slave owner this image would most likely cause anger and hatred. The purpose of the cartoon is to inform people of the rights that slaves also have. I believe the reason to why they placed a freed slave with a uniform is to show how slaves fought for their freedom and how they earned it. That they are just as capable to serve in the army as any white man. A. R. Waud created this picture, he was an english writer who supported the abolition of slavery and the equality of all men.

The image is anti-abolitionist as it depicts them as an evil figure similar to that of a monster that would take a kid. It shows a black mother using them as a threat to have her child behave. This is meant to show that even blacks are anti-abolitionist and is likely meant for white people to see to join their cause. This cartoon is meant to demonize the abolitionist movement as its purpose is in support of slavery. It depicts the slaves and blacks themselves as thinking that they aren’t as superior as whites because of the way the mother calls her son and the language she is using.
