1) Soldiers letters and diaries and journalistic writings as works of literary significance. Writers such as Ernest Hemingway went to war with the intention to return and share what he saw though literature. This didn't happen during the civil war. During civil war, Emerson was knitting socks during the war. The traditional literary art forms of the time were inadequate to describe the horrifying details of the civil war. Many civil war stories were written years after the war had ended

1. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and many other intellectual leaders met in 1861 at the bridge that Emerson had immortalized in "Concord Hymn," which is his famous poem on the american revolution.

1) For one of the few American poets or novelist who would witness the civil war first hand, the greatest cataclysm in U.S. history. The war was for a single cause was what historian James Ford Rhodes in 1913
