This is a good start. You could benefit from more use of connection between Giovanni's and King's words--connecting the concepts further. Also, you should also be more explicit in YOUR use of the literary devices.

This a good start. I would have like to see you amplify the ideas of "now is the time" and give more of an intersection with the ideas that Giovanni expresses in her poem. A good understanding of the connected destiny of all people in the United States.

In Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" Martin Luther King expresses his "Dream" that all men (white or black) are treated equally. When Martin Luther King expresses his thoughts, he does it with power. Martin Luther King says "I have a Dream" alot in order to have the saying stuck in people's head. He made sure that everyone knew that he wanted the Nation to act as a whole, instead of being segregated.

I believe that Nikki Giovanni would have reacted well with Martin Luther King's speech. Martin Luther King would have made Giovanni believe in the words said by Martin Luther King. Giovanni was inspired by Martin Luther King.

You needed to get a little more creative and build the voice of Giovanni as the prompt required. You have a clear identification of the devices.

I don’t think Dr. King would be a fan of the Hunger Games.

A strong response and use of the text to reflect a discussion of violence in the present world. You bring up good points about the conflict between words of peace and the realities of war. Nice examination of the desensitization of the modern world towards the realities of violence, via video games. Additionally, you highlight the areas where freedom still needs to be explored.

You are tackling quite a bit here in this response. You examine the role that prejudices continue to play in modern society. You also provide a thoughtful critique of the power-dynamic of public speech and the way in which individuals can be manipulated by the packaging of "truth." Additionally, you give a thoughtful analysis of how religion can become a decisive rather than unifying force in the modern world.

A great use of voice here and a great title for the piece. There is a real sense of the public reaction to the speech, built by the great details that you use to give weight to the moment. Your sense of possibility for change is also amplified through your description of Giovanni's reactions.

You identify a number of areas of "rights" still to be one. I would have liked to see you expand on one of these "rights" more specifically in your discussion of King's speech and the role of tolerance and non-violence that King highlights.

This has a great discussion of how inaction can also have complicity with the violence of others. I would like to see a bit more direct reference to specific claims made by King and their correlation to Giovanni's poem.

Martin luther King, Jr. in today's world: Nikki Giovanni closes her poem with the lines: "We seek the freedom of free men/ And the construction of a world/ Where Martin Luther King could have lived/ and preached non-violence."

You highlight an important issue of violence within America and the role he could play in the area of gang violence. I would like you to see how the concepts of racial injustice that King highlights might reflect continuing areas of social injustice that may need to be still addressed more specifically. Expand your ideas.

Good identification of the "skin" concept in America and how ethnicity or cultural background continues to result in misguided judging of others. I would like to see you amplify the solution here in this response.

During his lifetime, King Jr. was on the FBI watchlist, so while he may have engaged in free speech, he was not without the watchful eyes. Good uses of modern examples of non-mainstream groups and how they are often perceived in the ideas of those with power. A strong reflection on the modern climate and potential horror that King might express.

I firmly believe that Martin Luther King, Jr. could preach non-violence and tolerance in the present day. The immense technological advancements the world has achieved in the past 50-some years since the Civil Rights movement have made it so that anyone and everyone can speak their mind. America has also undergone a transformation in that half-century, a cultural and ideological metamorphosis that has reformed our society so that blatant racism is no longer tolerated, and (at least in theory) everyone is legally granted equal treatment and opportunity. These things create a perfect environment for King’s message to be heard, and, more importantly, listened to.

You provide a strong discussion of how prejudicial beliefs continue to find their way into American life and how the modern-age offers ways for individuals to move beyond them, if they seek out alternative points of view.
