Write an Opinion-Editorial piece taking on the persona and developing your reaction to the speech. This should be a creative response to JFK's inaugural address, so consider the SOAPStone (Subject, Occassion, Audience, Purpose, and Speaker) and the words that you choose to convey your reaction. Make use of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos as you frame your response. Also utilize at least 10 devices in your writing (e.g. use anaphora or parallelism). 300 words.
In class, you selected one of the following personas: Soviet Diplomat, Cuban Exile or Civil Rights Activist. Each prompt gives you guided questions to assist with framing your response.

John F. Kennedy, we take joy in hearing your words, but words can only do so much, action is what my nation needs to see. We dream that your words of friendship and assistance will be a reality for our countries. Can two nations with a history, so long and different, become one? With out a clear plan or future I fear that these words although sound promising, will be hallow shells of hopelessness. Maybe education of the people and the government will understand the benefits of joining together as one mindset to set our country free. When you state that it will take all the people to recognize our challenges, there is always two sides to a story. With the half truth we will never be able to see honesty between both nations respecting the different views of others around the world, action must take place. We agree that America has enough power to help all people who are faced with poverty, but I dream that i will be able to go home as a free man to my home land and return to the United States without any kind of restrictions. With this type of support we can begin to bring the message of both countries to the people, and open their eyes to the wonderful opportunities of both worlds. Your speech was inspirational and gives my nation hope that one day we might be free, but life is full of surprising moments. So, John F Kennedy if you stay true the words you speak of, we will stay true to ours and find a way to set us free one day. Life as we know it may change forever by your inspiring words. Action needs to take place for us to be set free one day.

Russian Diplomat -- I can assure you it is not my pleasure to be here on this accursed soil, plauged with the blood of those you cnsidered freedom fighters. But this country is not free. The American Dream is but an idea held by the people, and they chase it like sheep. The idea of the American Dream will never work with a government such as yours, fighting to have have control over the world. Thanks to you, the people in Cuba are not free. And us soviets will come to their aid before you decide you want to control us as well. You claim your nuclear program is for protection but we don't believe that, we believe the weapons are for westward expansion; Eastbound western expansion at that. It certainly would not be the first time you claimed land that is not yours. You are warned, U.S.A., you are all warned, we are ready, and if provoked, we will be the one to take the first strike. And if that's how it will be, our weapons will promise, justice and equality to all Americans, living in your lie of a country.

I have appreciated Senator, now President Kennedy, for his apology to the U.S.S.R. for Francis Gary Powers' U-2 flight over the Soviet Union. I believe that with him now in this great head of power, things may finally begin to change. I agree with your request for new peace. With some work the great United States and the Soviet Union could work together and help one another. To do this we must agree that peace is the answer and that, your hopes of building up your army is not to invade other countries. I hope that you stand by your pledge of loyalty, and that the future can see great times.
